They’re tough, for sure! Our popular image of an armadillo revolves around its hard shell and how it curls up in a ball to defend itself. Actually, that only describes one type of these critters. There are many other unique attributes in the family, but all are pretty amazing!
All armadillos have shells, and that’s where they get their name from. It means “little armored one.” And they’re the only mammals that have shells! But it’s only the three-banded armadillo that can curl itself up inside the shell.
There are 21 species of armadillo – even a pink one, aptly named the pink fairy armadillo! The nine-banded armadillo can hold its breath for up to six minutes, and can even walk underwater to cross streams! These really are fantastic animals.

Her’es another great entry in the great stuffed animal field. Douglas Toys of New Hampshire produces this cute guy!
Soft and with a great filling that bounces back well after hugs, it measures 11 inches long and weighs about a quarter of a pound.
His official name is Tex, but any owner is free to rename him as they like. But it’s a great association with the Lone Star State!

The color is an attractive caramel – not something we usually associate with armadillos, but it does look amazing!
There’s even a great story in the description. Mike the Armadillo is one of four quadruplets! And yes, we didn’t mention it above, but nine-banded armadillos are born as identical quadruplets. Freaky, isn’t it!
It weighs about 5 ounces and is recommended for kids 3 and up.

This guy looks a bit different than the three-banded and nine-banded armadillos that we’re most familiar with, but we’ve seen images of other types that do look more like him. He’s not colored like the pinky fairy, but the shell and body form are similar. Regardless, it’s still sooooo cute!
This toy measures 12 inches long (not including the tail). It weighs about 3 or 4 ounces. And most of all, it’s great for cuddling!

Armadillos are one of those animals that seems so exotic because of its uniqueness. And maybe it’s even more exotic than we imagined, considering all the amazing traits across different species! Any armadillo adorer will surely love having one more of these stuffed toys in their collection.
