It’s not sleek. It’s not pretty by any traditional standard. No bright colors to speak of, and it’s not generally known for any particular “normal” element of appeal. And while it may appear big and slow, it’s actually one of the most dangerous animals on the African continent. And yet – we love the hippo!
There’s just something about this big beast that spends so much of its time nearly submerged in water. It’s got a huge fan base, for sure!
Here we’ve picked some of our favorite hippopotamus stuffed toys. Let’s have a look – they’re great for your children, for any hippo fan among your friends or family – or for yourself!
Aurora Plush Hippo Tubbie Wubbie
This great plushie hippo comes from Aurora, and it’s one of two entries they have on our list today. This one is the bigger of the two. Although they list it at 12″, it’s unclear how they measure; it seems to be just a shade under 10″. However it’s amazingly cute, soft and cuddly!
The eyes are made of plastic and sewn on, so it’s important to be mindful of them with younger children.
Overall it’s a great piece and a perfect size for toddlers!
ADORE 14″ Farting Hippo Stuffed Animal
Because everyone needs a farting hippo stuffed toy right? But they do have their place. It just might not be in the hands of your child. Or your husband. At least not when guests are visiting.
Still, this is a great toy that’s adorable for its looks. It’s stuffed full, so it’s not especially cuddly. But for display purposes it’s great.
Many people bought this because it’s the closest they could find to Abby’s farting hippo on NCIS (which apparently is no longer available). So besides hippo and, umm, farting toy fans, it’s great for NCIS fans, especially those who love Abby Sciuto (played by Pauley Perrette).
Some people did report problems with the sound box not working right. It seems that newer models do have a velcro opening so the box can be accessed, at least. Still, you might be happier if it doesn’t work. That way you can just enjoy how cute this is without the embarrassment!
Fiesta Toys Standing Hippo Plush Toy
Ok, back to the silent hippos. No, not “silent but deadly” – just plain old silent. This plushie actually looks a bit more like the one from Abby’s lab on NCIS, but it doesn’t make any noise at all. Apparently the seller gets asked that a lot, since they include it right in the description!
This toy measures around 14” long, 6 3/4″ tall , 4″ wide. What do you make of its expression? We’ve seen comments ranging from it being a happy smile to a very angry hippo! But it definitely showing the familiar appearance of the hippo’s wide-open mouth.
This is soft and cuddly. It’s on the large side, so it might be better for children past a year or so old. However, it does seem to have sewn-on plastic eyes. Be sure to check to see if that’s changed before giving it to a very young child to avoid a choking hazard.
Wildlife Tree 12″ Stuffed Hippopotamus
Wildlife Tree presents this plushie that’s part of their heirloom collection. This hippo is best in the sitting position, as shown. The arms and legs are floppy, so although they move, they don’t remain in position.
It measures 12″ long, which is a good size for a young child.
Because of the sewn-on eyes, it’s recommended for children 3 years and older.
This is a great piece and part of a fantastic collection of high-quality plushies. As of this writing, there were at least 42 available. Most are animals alive today, but there are also some dinosaur plushies. And there’s a note that at least one other piece will soon be back in stock (it’s not shown in the listings right now) so we hope that and others will be added!
Little Howard the Stuffed Hippo
Here’s another stuffed hippo from Aurora. This is a small version, though, measuring just 8″ officially. That makes it a tiny bit bigger than a Beanie Baby. It’s cute, soft and cuddly.
It can be held even by a very young baby, but be sure to be alert to the eyes. There’s been no reported problems, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry, especially when it comes to our babies.
This is also great for anyone who loves collecting these smaller plushies. They’ll love it for how soft and cuddly it really is!
Wrapping It Up
Hippos are really big and despite their rather drab colors, they attract us to them. For anyone who loves this animal or just wants to complete their collection, these will be great additions! And you’ve even got an option that makes the sound of passing gas, for that “special someone” who deserves or desires that type of gift!
