Yes, for decades, Groundhog’s Day has been an unofficial holiday. When the groundhog comes out of his burrow, he becomes a meteorologist. If he sees a shadow, we’re supposed to expect six more weeks of winter. Bah humbug! But if he doesn’t see it, then spring should come early.
Now, there are many groundhogs in different parts of North America that are supposed to be the official predictors. Punxsutawney Phil was the one we grew up hearing about. But there are at least 9 others: Buckeye Chuck, Balzac Bill, Milltown Mel, Fred la Marmotte, General Bearegard Lee, Gus the Groundhoug, Staten Island Church, Wiarton Willie, and Stormy Marmot.
Phil hails from Pennsylvania. His accuracy is between 35% – 40%. Really, is that THAT bad for a weather forecaster? We’ve all seen others that have done worse.
The story of Groundhog’s Day goes back way before the movie of the same name, but the film definitely spread the popularity of the celebration. And there are tons and tons of fans out there who wouldn’t dare miss the broadcast on February 2 (or any chance to watch the movie over, and over, and over again).
